Just how up-to-date are you on the global epidemic of bubble foil insulation? Actually, there is no epidemic, but if you are not aware of the bubble foil option used in construction and shipping, then you are likely dealing with more monthly expenses, lower quality piping, and plenty of damaged insulation vulnerable to fungi and bacteria.

Indeed, there are economic benefits to using bubble foil insulation. This type of insulation is in reference to a foil-backed bubble pack. This product is used as a vapor barrier and has many advantages due to its thinness and flexibility. This product works wonders on cold pipes and cold ducts.

How is bubble foil insulation used? It is used both in construction and shipping, and works by creating a reflective insulation environment that reflects radiant energy. This allows for stronger heat entry or exit. This technology can be useful in engineering as well as in shipping materials that are perishable.

As stated, there are distinct advantages to using this form of insulation technology. It can reduce your electric bill and allow for better resistance against humidity and very hot or cold temperatures. While there are other insulation products, many of these are toxic. Bubble insulation is not, and it is much easier to clean as well. Because of its cleanliness, bubble insulation is also less likely to facilitate the growth of bacteria. This is particularly useful in the shipping industry, as it does much to protect food and drinks.

Is it time to look for bubble insulation? IPC, Insulated Products Corporation offers this new technology in the form of two insulation products: Foil-Build, ideal for construction, and FoilTech, for packaging. The company has worked with high profile clients, including the U.S. Army, Ghirardelli Chocolates, and HP. Visit the official website at IPCpack.com.

There are many methods of insulating a house or office building. Some are extremely effective and practical while others are not. The best insulation and most inexpensive method to insulate a house from the heat of summer is to use aluminum foil. The cost should only be approximately $200 to $350 to wrap an average 2000 sq. foot house in aluminum foil. The heavy weight aluminum foil is the most durable from a weathering standpoint. This is an absurd idea! This ridiculous idea would work, except for being aesthetically displeasing, violating a large number of local ordinances and home association covenants, and not very practical from an installation standpoint. There are alternatives that will yield similar results without the hassle, ugliness, and illegal aspects.

Radiant barriers possess similar reflective qualities of aluminum foil in order to provide maximum temperature control in a home. Much like aluminum foil found in many cooking applications, radiant barriers do not absorb heat, they reflect it. A relative new comer to the home insulation industry, radiant barriers are designed to be installed within attics and even under homes in crawl spaces.

In doing so, during the winter months a foil radiant barrier allows the heat of the home interior to be trapped inside and maintained while the house is sitting out in the open colder air. Obviously this is a perfect example for warming a home in the winter time, but what of the heat during the summer?

Radiant barriers don’t just trap warm air inside, they also help maintain cooler temperatures from the sizzling exterior heat. The key term is barrier. It works equally well against large temperature fluctuations of summer by reflecting the exterior heat back outside and reflecting the cooler interior temperatures inside.

This technology traces its origins back to military and N.A.S.A. developments. This truly is a space age material adapted for the construction industry. With a radiant barrier installed, the homeowner should notice a drop in energy costs which translates to saving money. With today’s economic struggles, that is especially important for families trying to make ends meet.

It’s not the easiest thing to choose insulation there are just so many different options that you have before you. This is why it’s important that you learn about some of the various choices. Each room in your home whether it’s the attic, basement, bathroom, kitchen or bedroom will require some form of insulation. The type of insulation you choose might change, but the need for it will not.

When your home is better insulated the results are a much lower energy bill. Saving money is a great thing, and when it is month after month it’s even better.

Let’s take a look at reflective foil insulation, is like a barrier from the hot summer heat, and the cold winter nights. It will actually keep the heat from escaping from your home during the winter, and prevent the heat from coming into your home during the summer. It’s a little like magic. This is one of the most effective and widely used types of insulation. You can find this type of insulation in various types that will be suitable for just about any area in your home.

Another great type of insulation is fireproof insulation. This will be required around certain areas in your home such as the boiler room, kitchens. Although using in around your entire home isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

The best type of insulation to use is really going to depend on which area of your home you are looking to use it. Every aspect of your home will require some type of insulation barrier – your roof, the basement, and each wall and ceiling of you home. They will not use the same type.

You can learn about the different types of insulation to use by searching the internet and searching based on where you live will help to improve your search. Hotter states such as Nevada, or Florida will have specific types of insulation that will be better suitable. There is no lack of great information and you will even be able to find how to video tutorials to guide you through installing it yourself. Be sure that you completely understand how to install it properly because if you do it wrong it could do the opposite of what you are looking to do, and that is lowering your energy bill. For example if you put radiant barrier in with the foil side facing down you will allowing the heat in during the summer and bringing the cold air in during the winter.

As new product offerings meet consumers new educated demand, we are seeing dramatic improvements in the way today’s homes are insulated. Many of these homes are becoming tightly sealed using a variety of appropriate insulation products.

A major area that is often overlooked however is the concrete foundation wall. A foundation wall without proper insulation or one that is un-insulated can attribute to significant heat loss within the building envelope.

A poorly insulated wall can be the host of many serious issues. The problems can include:

moisture problems

radon gas infiltration

insect infestation

Reflective foil bubble insulation is an excellent foundation wall insulation product to use.Installing a radiant barrier using reflective foil insulation on the exterior or dirt side of a basement wall has many advantages. These include the following:

Correctly using reflective bubble insulation for foundation walls can help eliminate moisture problems. The moisture is created by the temperature difference between the outside earth around the basement and the basement’s interior.

Reflective foil insulation, as with any radiant barrier product, blocks the transfer of radiant heat. Less heat is absorbed through and out of the foundation walls.

Bubble foil insulation, as with any exterior insulation, protects the damp proof coating required for use on the dirt side of the foundation wall while back-filling.

Using reflective foil bubble insulation foil acts as a capillary break that stops moisture intrusion. This creates a thermal bridge that protects the foundation wall from the freeze-thaw cycle that is existent in all cold climates.

Insulating the exterior compared to the interior saves on square footage.

Radiant barrier products are impervious to insect infiltration.

Creates vapor and radon barrier eliminating moisture transfer around wall.

When it comes to home and office insulation, people have a number of different choices. A great new option is available in the form of bubble foil insulation, which has proven to be a great product. One of the major challenges of insulation is reaching the required R value, which determines the strength of the insulation. This new insulation meets and exceeds the R value expectations. The bubble design forms a special layer that works as the ideal temperature barrier.

Typically, people use bubble foil insulation for many different purposes. For instance, this type of insulation is perfect for walls with or without masonry, crawl spaces, pipes, concrete slabs, garage doors, ducts, wine cellars, water heaters, and so on. Therefore, this type of insulation works for much more than just ceilings or walls. This insulation makes the home and office far more energy efficient. On average, using this type of insulation keeps rooms 10 degrees cooler than what a person would normally see with Styrofoam insulations.

Whether building a new home or updating current insulation, bubble foil insulation should be a top choice. Its versatility makes it one of the most useful insulation variants on the market. IPC Pack is a great source of affordable insulation. This company is family-owned and operated, taking great pride in what they have to offer. Their insulation is manufactured and ready for shipping. With more than 10 years of experience under their belt, this company has a full understanding of their products, and of customers’ needs.

After deciding to install radiant barrier you need to decide which installation method is best for your home. There are two main criteria that should influence your decision:
1) Your climate area and
2) Whether you have ductwork in the attic.

The two most common methods of installing radiant barrier are to either staple the attic foil to the bottom of your roof rafters or lay out the radiant barrier foil insulation over your existing batt or blown-in attic insulation.

If you live in a cold or mixed climate laying the radiant barrier across the attic floor insulation is the easiest and most effective. In the Summer it will reduce radiant heat gain into the home and in the Winter it will reduce heat loss by radiation and minimize convective looping which is the cold heavy air falling through the attic insulation which reduces the R-Value of the attic insulation. Remember, foil insulation is NOT a substitute for regular attic insulation. They work together to reduce both radiant and conductive heat flow.

If you live in a warm or hot climate and have NO ductwork in the attic, then go ahead and lay the radiant barrier attic foil on top of your existing insulation. This is the best option for reducing both Summer heat gain and Winter Heat Loss. Make sure you have adequate insulation BEFORE adding radiant barrier. Once the radiant barrier is put over the blown-in insulation you cannot put more insulation on top. This will eliminate the benefit of a radiant barrier, which requires an air space on one side of the foil to be effective.

If you DO have ductwork in the attic, then consider the staple-up method. When you think about it, putting ductwork in the attic is like making ice cream in the oven. Not really smart. By stapling the foil to the bottom of the rafters you will get the benefit of reducing radiant heat gain into the attic insulation AND reducing the attic temperature. By reducing the attic temperature, less heat will be transferred INTO the ductwork by conductive heat flow. Plus, it’s very cool to walk into your attic on hot Summer day and it feel tolerable compared to being inside of an oven.

Either install method works well. In colder climates, laying across the attic insulation is the way to go. In warm/hot climates it’s a decision of what’s easiest verses what is best. Putting the foil over existing insulation is usually the easiest and works great. Stapling to the bottom of the roof rafters will create a cooler attic, put the ductwork in a less hostile environment AND reduce radiant heat gain into the home. The staple-up method results in the least overall heat gain into the home. Both radiant barrier install methods will make your home more comfortable and save you money on your utility bills.

The best residential insulation system today includes the use of three different products; sprayed in foam insulation, fiberglass, and radiant barriers or reflective foil insulation.

The reasons to use sprayed in foam insulation are clear cut. Provided the application is done correctly, foams ability to stop air infiltration or the transfer of convective heat is unequal in comparison to other insulation types. The only initial drawback is cost. Fiberglass insulation does the same job, although not as well for a lesser cost. Radiant barriers or reflective foil insulation are the only way to stop the transfer of radiant heat and have proven themselves extremely effective especially in attic, house-wrap, and under-slab applications.

Attic radiant barriers and house-wraps are all sold in a particular size range, all fitting for their use. Generally the roll size is 48" wide and 125′ or 250′ long. Under slab reflective foil insulation is sold in rolls of 16" x 125′ or 48" x 125′.

But what happens if you need specific size rolls for other insulation projects such as walls, ceilings, crawlspaces, or duct wrap applications for example? The problem is that most suppliers whether e-commerce or the traditional construction supply house do not offer any other size roll options. Furthermore, they may not be aware of where to get the information for you. This severely limits your applications and makes installation more labor intensive and time consuming.

The following is a list of reflective foil insulation roll sizes that are available on the market today.

12" x 50′
24" x 50′
36" x 50′
48" x 50′
16" x 75′
24" x 75′
48" x 100′
16" x 125′
18" x 125′
24" x 125′

Note: For large or commercial projects the standard industry roll size is 48" x 125′ or 500 square feet.

Despite consumer awareness, the roll size offered by manufacturers of reflective foil insulation is actually very broad, larger than that of fiberglass manufacturers. This allows the incorporation of radiant barrier systems in all applications and guarantees the easiest installation possible. This all reduces material waste, time, and labor making your insulation project more efficient.

As energy costs continue to climb and we more faithfully commit to demand less energy, the use of alternative insulation products continue to grow.

For years, fiberglass was the most widely used form of insulation. Fiberglass insulation is excellent at slowing the transfer of convective heat. Its performance is measured in an r-value number. Generally the thicker the insulation is, the greater the r-value. Fiberglass insulation is relatively inexpensive, installs quickly, and is readily available.

Although fiberglass is ideal in many applications, it does have drawbacks. It is prone to insect and rodent infiltration. Fiberglass also cannot handle excessive moisture. The r-value of fiberglass insulation drops sharply when any level of moisture is added to the material. This eliminates its use in crawlspace applications and many areas around concrete slabs. This also limits its ability in attic applications.

In the limitations of fiberglass is where radiant barriers and reflective foil insulation products excel. Radiant barriers and reflective foil insulation are impervious to moisture, and insect and rodent infiltration. They are designed to be used in the following applications:

House-wraps: Radiant barriers replace existing house-wraps. Standard house-wraps are a strong weave of perforated vapor barrier. Radiant barrier house-wraps offer this same characteristic but also with a reflective layer allowing it to also block the transfer of radiant heat.

Attics: Radiant Barriers also excel in attic applications. In attics, moisture levels constantly change and most of a home’s heat is either lost or gained here. Fiberglass insulation is not enough to stop the transfer of radiant heat. The use of a radiant barrier that reflects radiant heat is now imperative in attics.

Under-Slabs and Basements: Basements are infinite heat sinks due to their contact with the earth. Their high moisture level severely limits the use of fiberglass insulation. Reflective foil insulation is not affected by moisture and its radiant heat blocking properties are also ideal in these applications.

Crawlspaces and Duct-Wraps: In these areas reflective foil insulation is the only product to use. Fiberglass insulation is not appropriate. Its inability to handle moisture and insect and rodent infestation make its use impractical.

To prevent any confusion, radiant barrier and reflective foil insulation products are designed to stop the transfer of radiant heat. Fiberglass insulation is designed to stop the transfer of convective heat. It is unfair to judge the two types of insulation against each other. They are designed to stop two different types of heat transfer. Stopping both convective and radiant heat transfer has to be done in order to have an efficient insulation system. To do this, radiant barrier reflective foil insulation technology and fiberglass insulation, or another product designed to stop convective heat gain should be used together whenever possible.

Using reflective foil duct wrap insulation to create a radiant barrier around your duct work is one of the easiest DIY projects you can do to improve the performance of your heating and/or cooling system.Every minute HVAC systems run without effective insulation, your ducts leak valuable energy.

Properly insulating your ducts to create a radiant barrier can help stop radiant heat flow resulting in improved efficiency and less demand on your furnace or air conditioning units. This results in longer equipment life and lower utility bills.

Installing a radiant barrier using reflective foil insulation designed for duct applications is a relatively easy project if you can follow a few steps. First, decide how to run the insulation around the ducts.Create a sketch if you need to.This allows you to incorporate your measurements and identify problematic areas. You will save these harder areas for last.

1. Place a string around the largest common section of your duct and get a measurement to determine the width of insulation you will need.Duct wrap reflective foil insulation comes in sizes measuring between 24-48 inches wide and from lengths as long as 125 feet.

2. Add an extra ten inches width to your measurement for ordering purposes. The insulation must be wide enough to accommodate the addition of spacers.Using spacers to create an airspace helps achieve higher values, up to R-6.The other lower r-value option is to wrap the duct with no spacers.

3. Order an appropriate amount of insulation and reflective foil tape to complete the project.Duct wrap projects generally require more tape than other reflective foil insulation projects because tape is used more often in problematic spots to create a seal around the insulation. Many times these areas are not perfectly shaped and the extra tape helps to join and seal various pieces of insulation.

4. Apply Spacers:Spacers are applied approximately every 4 feet. They should also be used whenever two pieces of insulation are joined together. This guarantees an adequate airspace throughout your project further increasing your energy gains.

5. Create spacers by cutting three inch wide strips of material and wrapping them around the duct at predetermined locations.

6. Note:Duct wrap insulation kits make applying spacers much faster.Kits contain L- shaped spacers. These are applied to all four sides of the ducts. These spacers are four feet long allowing you to cover distance much faster.Using insulation kits also guarantees a spacer where one piece of insulation stops and another one starts.

7. Install Insulation:Cut insulation to length for specific area.Wrap duct with insulation.Tape seam.If insulation is too long it can be trimmed with razor knife or utility scissors.

8. Continue installing insulation until ducts are wrapped.

9. Complete areas where obstacles were.Figure out the best way to wrap the area.Try to incorporate a gap for airspace when possible.Ensure all seams are taped. The key to these areas are to get them wrapped and taped.Aesthetics are secondary.

Walk entire duct run and ensure all portions are wrapped.Tape and seal all seams where any pieces of insulation meet.Make sure all seams are sealed.

You have now created a radiant barrier surrounding your duct work that will reflect radiant heat, a major source of energy loss.By using spacers, an airspace has also been created that will allow the reflective foil insulation to work at its optimal level.

Rest assured that in the winter heating months, heat is being delivered where you want it, in your living space. Much less is radiating uselessly out of your ducts. In the summer cooling months, radiant heat gain is blocked from entering your ducts allowing your air conditioning to work as efficiently as possible.

Compared to new industry products, today’s insulation practices are largely inefficient. As these dogmatic methods give way to new techniques and materials, a specific product has become the preferred choice in under concrete slab applications.

Ultra Concrete Barrier Foil or Ultra CBF is a reflective foil insulation product designed specifically for under poured concrete slabs.Ultra CBF’s patented bubble/foil/bubble layering system ensures that none of the reflective foil is in direct contact with the curing concrete. The foil is in the middle of the product keeping a small airspace between the outside layers of bubbles. This is different than standard reflective foil insulation where the product design is foil/bubble/foil.

Ultra CBF reflective foil insulation serves three major purposes in under concrete slab use.

1. Insulates and slows slab to earth (conductive and radiant) heat loss.
2. Creates a vapor barrier.
3. Creates a radon barrier.

Today’s under-slab insulation should also meet these requirements. It does, but relies on two products.Generally two inch foam insulation boards and clear plastic sheets are used together.

Ultra Concrete Barrier Foil does the same job of the plastic sheets (vapor and radon barrier) and the two inch foam boards (insulation) in one product that is only " thick.Ultra CBF is flexible and can easily be unrolled and cut.It is much easier to ship and transport and generally costs less per square foot than using foam boards and plastic. In addition Ultra CBF is a reflective foil radiant barrier insulation product that reflects radiant heat.

As material costs and consumer expectations continue to rise insulating with Ultra CBF in under concrete slab applications is the most efficient choice.

1. Costs less per square foot.
2. Installs easier, especially on rough grade
3. Easier to handle.
4. Easier to cut, especially around plumbing and other piping.
5. Easier to walk on, superior bubble strength withstands jobsite traffic.
6. Does not break or crack
