Looking at Insulating Within A Loft Space
Reflective foil insulation is the lesser known cousin of the home insulation family. While it has gained much popularity and is widely used in new build projects today, many owners of older houses won’t have it fitted. Whether your building a new house or planning to add additional insulation to your existing home, you should strongly consider reflective foil insulation to compliment any of the traditional insulation materials.

So how does it work? Well, heat moves from point A to point B in one of three ways. The first is known as conduction, this is the transfer or heat energy through matter. Most of the standard forms of home insulation are designed to slow heat transfer by conduction. The Insulation is essentially a very poor conductor of heat and so it drastically slows down heat loss.
The next means of heat transfer is through convection, this is the conveyance of heat in a liquid or a gas. This is what’s used to circulate heat through your home. Air in the vicinity of your radiator or heat source is heated and then circulates around the room. A current or air flow pattern is set up in the space being heated, this current is fuelled by your heater or radiator.
The third means of heat transfer and the one we’re concerned with in this article is radiation. This is the direct transmission off heat energy from a hot surface. Standard home insulation is pretty ineffective at stopping radiant heat; therefore a radiant barrier is required. A radiant barrier acts like a mirror and literally reflects the heat rays back on themselves. You will recognise a radiant barrier as an aluminium foil. It’s usually combined with standard foam board insulation as a liner, to form a composite insulation, effective at blocking heat radiation and conduction.
It’s well worth considering a radiant barrier in your home, especially if you’ve decided to retrofit to improve your energy efficiency. The most common location for radiant barriers is the attic. Not only do they have benefits in blocking heat radiation escaping into the atmosphere, but they are extremely effective at reducing solar heat gain in the attic space that can subsequently heat up water and fresh air ducts that pass through the attic.
